Dear Fellow SMA Members:
As we approach our Spring Membership Meeting it is time to solicit
nominations for the Executive Board. All Officer positions are open (chair,
first-vice and second-vice; two secretaries, treasurer) for one-year duration,
as well as two Member-at-Large positions for three-year duration. Past-chairs do
remain on the Board beyond the one-year term in an advisory and voting capacity.
The only requirement of candidacy is Full Membership in the SMA. You can
check your Membership status by going to the Member
Search Area.
The Executive Board meets via telephone hook-up several times a year
based on the projects being handled at any given time. The Chair, Secretaries
and Treasurer have the most time-consuming roles as they administer the
day-to-day activities of the Association. The remaining Board members put in as
much time as possible based on their specific interests and availability. Much
of the Board business is handled via e-mail so that touring stage managers and
those based outside of the greater NY metropolitan area can participate.
So take a moment: if you are a new member in Florida and you want to be
as involved as possible you should contact us. If you have been a member for
twenty years and still feel isolated you should contact us. If you are on a
Committee and have ideas on how that group can be more active or better
organized we definitely want to hear from you. If you have an interest in
helping the SMA revise its Constitution to better serve the needs of 21st
century stage managers let us know.
So, if this message has piqued your interest, here’s all you need to do
to start: contact
Erin Joy
Swank to advise that you wish to be a candidate for a particular position.
Deadline for this initial contact is Friday, April 14, 2006. Shortly
thereafter you will be asked to submit a candidate statement.
If you have specific questions about responsibilities any of the Board
positions, you can contact the individuals directly via the website. Or you may
contact Erin or Margie Price, co-Chairs of the
Nominating
Committee.
Anyone who has ever volunteered for anything knows that you get out of
the experience what you put in to it. They also know that the benefits cannot be
measured but are life-long and often life-changing. We hope you will consider
running for a position, and thank you in advance. We look forward to hearing
from you soon.

John Atherlay, new Chair of the SMA Nominating Committee, writes:
As April has arrived, the SMA turns it's attention to this year's
board elections.
We now need to put together a ballot. Available are two seats on
the Executive Board and all six Officer Seats (Chair, 1st Vice Chair, 2nd Vice
Chair, [2] Secretaries, and Treasurer).
Anyone interested in running - and all paid-up Full members are encouraged to
get involved - for any of the 8 seats available should contact John
Atherlay. Please supply your name, position interested in running for and a
contact number.
Also, if you'd like to be involved in putting together the ballot (becoming a
member of the Nominating Committee), please contact John Atherlay at the same
email address.
Interviews of candidates will be held the week of April 14-21. We plan to have
the ballot in the mail by April 25. All candidates will be required to submit a
statement to be included with the ballot.
The new board will be announced at the annual membership meeting in May (date to
be announced soon).
Again, all Full members are encouraged to become involved. Serving on the Board
is a great way to become involved, and to have a say in the operation of the
SMA.
