Chicago – SM GO: Storytime in honor of Malcolm Ewen
Thursday, June 4, 2020
In order to pay respect and give space to the imperative conversation surrounding systemic racially-motivated police brutality, including two of its most recent victims: George Floyd, who was murdered on May 26th by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, and Breonna Taylor, who was murdered in her home on March 13th by Louisville police officers Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankinson and Myles Cosgrove, the SMA will be shifting the focus of our June 4th Chicago SM GO.
Instead of swapping stories, we will host a Central Region-based discussion tomorrow evening on how we can combat systemic racism in our communities, how we can actively practice anti-racism both as individuals and as stage managers, and what steps we can take to make our profession more inclusive. As a jumping-off point for this discussion, we would like to encourage attendance of tonight’s Year of the Stage Manager national discussion on these issues (details in the comments below).
We will still give a birthday toast to Malcolm Ewen, who not only was an invaluable stage manager in the Chicago community, but also an active Equity member and Councillor, dedicated to service and education of SMs everywhere. We encourage Central Region SMs to come together tomorrow evening to discuss current affairs as they relate to our SM community just as Mal would have done.
The Chicago SM GO dedicated to sharing various Stage Management stories will now be held on Thursday, June 25th. We hope this will give everyone additional time to hone their stories to share and continue Malcolm’s tradition of telling stories.
