SubjectApplying for Union Jobs
Question

Hi! I am a new stage manager, and I am looking to apply for some remote positions. I found a couple options, but one is labeled as "Union". As I am just getting started and I don't know how steady my work will be for the foreseeable future, I am not ready to actually join AEA. Is it still possible to apply for this union job, though? I love the theater that the job is for, so I was very excited about potentially applying, but I am unsure if I can apply as non-union, or if I did somehow get the position, what that would mean moving forward. Any advice would be so helpful! Thank you for your time!

Hi Julia,
If you are excited about the job I would suggest you apply to it! You can always talk to the employer about this during the interview (if you have to become Union or what other options there may be). Or maybe you will find that you are ready to become Union and this is a great step for you. I would not let the word "union: hold you back though. Go for it! Its the best way to grow.

Hi Julia,
I would absolutely reach out to the employer to get as many specifics as possible about the job and joining the union. See what options are available to you and then make the decision, but don't let the word "union" stop you from inquiring.
All the best,
Matt DiCarlo
